HEADS OF SIXTH FORM ONLINE SUMMER CONFERENCE

THE CHANGING POST-16 LANDSCAPE 2022-3 AND BEYOND: WHAT DO HEADS OF SIXTH FORM NEED TO KNOW...including 40 hours extra funding

Speaker: Kevin Gilmartin, Post 16 Specialist, ASCL

It is important to lift our sights to the medium and long-term issues impacting on post-16. In this extended session, Kevin will address:

40 Additional hours funding - the guidance outlined and how some centres are approaching it

T Levels will be addressed in terms of the very latest information on which BTECs appear to be defunded and which ones can schools and colleges continue to offer.

Higher Education Reform - this key consultation document addresses minimum entry requirements for university, student number controls, and changes to student finance.

HIGHER EDUCATION BRIEFING FOR SIXTH FORM LEADERS: KEEPING UP-TO-DATE

Mike Nicholson, Deputy Head of Education Services, University of Cambridge

PSHE - EQUIPPING YOUR STUDENTS TO LOOK AFTER THEIR OWN MENTAL HEALTH

Speaker: Peter Radford, PSHE Specialist, Beyond This

Prevention is better than cure.

This session will look at the understanding and self-care essentials we need to be teaching our students in order that they manage their mental health and stay well.

It will also highlight the 3 strategic changes we need to make as schools to enable a mentally healthy school culture.

PSHE - CHALLENGING A CULTURE OF MYSOGYNY AND HARASSMENT

Speaker: Peter Radford, PSHE Specialist, Beyond This

The prevalence of misogynistic 'banter' and sexual harassment is clear. Changing this culture will take more than a new policy or set of sanctions.

This session will clarify what sexual harassment is, why it persists and how to address it. The recording will also be available to use with students.

OFSTED - KEY INSIGHTS FROM RECENTLY INSPECTED CENTRES

Speaker panel, current Sixth Form Leaders

This proved to be a hugely popular session in November. The panellists are sixth form leaders from a range of centres that have been inspected under the 2021-22 regime and will pass on their feedback and advice for other centres.

We managed to pack in advice from six centres at the winter conference and intend to do the same this summer, so this should prove to be equally useful for delegates.

STRATEGIES TO SUPPORT HIGH LEVELS OF ATTENDANCE AND TACKLE POOR PUNCTUALITY

Panel of Sixth Form Leaders including Alison Brown

No single centre will have all the answers, so we have put together a panel who have all approached these two perennial issues that are so important to get right.

MANAGING TUTORIAL TIME: BUILDING IN CULTURAL CAPITAL FOR SUCCESS AT POST 16

Speaker: Michael Senior, Founder NetSixthForm

Michael will share the resources centres can use to help them share the strategies of successful students with their own cohorts.

These engaging resources make the routines explicit and they can be re-used for those who do not take it on board the first time, so ideal for intervention.

CAREERS - THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE OF APPLYING FOR GRADUATE JOBS TODAY AND IMPLICATIONS ON SCHOOL EMPLOYABILITY PROGRAMMES

Speaker panel of recently employed graduates

Where do students find jobs? What sites do they use to help them prepare? What's the process like? How do students cope with rejection? What advice have students got to pass on to help sixth formers get ready?

This session will be offered to delegates afterwards with a student action planning sheet to use with students back in their own centres and so will prove a really helpful, ready-made employability session.

POST 16 SEND: RULES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Laura Page, Director of Inclusion, Odyssey Trust for Education

Laura is a former SENCO, AHT and now Director of Inclusion for a multi-academy trust

Knowing that Sixth Form Leaders are incredibly busy people, Laura will outline the key rules and responsibilities which need to be understood and met which many middle and senior leaders might not know.

Laura will also recommend simple systems that will help support students and yet help minimise workload

SUPPORTING HIGH ATTAINING STUDENTS - DEVELOPING THINKING SKILLS FOR COMPETITIVE ACADEMIC INTERVIEWS

Stephen Thomas, NetSixthForm Resources Editor

Stephen has been hard at work creating a new set of resources for delegates to re-use in their centres

Many students find thinking through challenging problems and thinking out loud their solutions, so Stephen has created resources tutors can use with all students that will get them thinking and talking about the challenge so that when they come to Oxbridge interviews and the like, they will be more confident and feel they can tackle the tasks provided. Stephen has supplied a highly useful resource which you can re-use in your centres.

SUPPORTING LOW ATTAINING STUDENTS - CHANGING STUDENT HABITS TO HELP THEM WORK HARDER AND SMARTER

Katie Cork, Head of Sixth Form, St Mary's School

Katie will present how she uses research to inform the way in which habits are learned and changed to help low achievers develop the habits of high achievers.

KEY UPDATES ON INTERNATIONAL APPLICATIONS

An increasing number of UK students are applying to international universities, with requirements and policies changing regularly.

David will give an update on key update on key changes for the current cycle and tips on how to stay up-to-date.

This will be a session available online after the conference.

HOW TO PREVENT 'LIFELESS DATA' IN YOUR SIXTH FORM

Danielle Thurlow, Director of Post 16 and Careers, Odyssey Trust for Education

Following a period of teacher assessed grades (TAGs) and disruption to learning, it is timely to reconsider the data we use in schools: it is helping to have an impact on outcomes for students?

Danielle has explored data used in a range of centres so she can start to embed even more effective systems in her centres. The aim being to ensure that no data is 'lifeless' and that it has impact.

Simple, effective and easily collected and managed will key to the process so that teacher workload is very much part of the process.

UNIVERSITY PANEL: ASK YOUR QUESTIONS TO A RANGE OF EXPERIENCED RECRUITMENT AND ADMISSIONS OFFICER

Panellists include a range of universities including Cambridge, Leicester, Lincoln, Gloucestershire, Winchester, Liverpool Hope, UEA, Swansea, Warwick, Royal Holloway and the London Interdisciplinary School.

Delegates find it incredibly helpful to hear responses direct from universities to their questions.

NAILING YOUR YEAR 12 ENROLMENT DAY WITH A SMOOTH, DIGITAL PROCESS

Antony Wambua, Applicaa Product Director

Sixth Form retention is key for all schools, so we have asked Applicaa to outline their cloud-based Admissions+ system.

There are a large number of centres using the Admissions+ and they report finding it to be a fast, accurate, online enrolment day management system.

The software also manages to auto-class balance and easily create timetables so that schools can issue them to students quickly.
