INTRODUCTION

Michael Senior, Founder, NetSixthForm

THE CHALLENGES IN HIGHER EDUCATION: IMPLICATIONS FOR HEADS OF SIXTH FORM

Speaker: Mike Nicholson, Director of Recruitment, Admissions and Participation, University of Cambridge

There's lots to share about the higher education landscape and not just that it's financially challenging at the moment, despite the increased demand as the number of post 18 students is projected to increase up to 2030 but then drop again thereafter.

Admissions tests at Cambridge and Imperial have changed and Oxford announced it's changing their admissions tests too.

As usual, Mike will provide a considered review of what heads of sixth need to know to help update tutors and students.

FREE & EQUAL AMBASSADORS: A BLUEPRINT FOR ENABLING STUDENTS TO DRIVE CHANGE

Speaker: Peter Radford, Founder, Beyond This & Faye Engelbrecht, Head of Sixth Form, Moulsham High Sixth Form

In this session Peter Radford from Beyond This will share an accessible scheme aimed at enabling your students to become proactive partners with your school in driving equality and inclusion.

The Free and Equal Ambassador Programme provides an opportunity for students to champion rights and respect, play a leading role in challenging discrimination in all its forms whilst also gaining invaluable experience in leadership, project planning and teamwork.

WHAT IS REALLY DRIVING STUDENT ABSENCE? AND WHAT CAN SIXTH FORM LEADERS DO?

Speaker: John Atkinson, School Partnership Officer at ImpactEd

In the session we will share insights from ImpactEd Evaluation's national Understanding Attendance research project.

In particular, we will focus on what we know about the importance of students' sense of belonging and explore other underlying causes considering students' engagement, and feeling of safety.

Sixth form leaders should gather some fresh ideas and renewed focus on what can be done that has impact.

Delegates will spend time sharing their ideas on how to improve attendance - what worked, what didn't - with colleagues around their table. These key practical ideas will be shared through technology, so ALL delegates gain the tips from EVERY table. Delegates should feel they are gathering a suite of tips and solutions from a wide range of schools.

THE FUTURE OF TUTORING: AI, IMPACT AND FUNDING

Speakers: Brett Roberts, Head of Education Partnerships, MyTutor and Sophie George, Senior Education Partnerships Manager, MyTutor

In this session, MyTutor expert will talk through 3 key areas for the future of tutoring; AI, Impact and Funding.

Answering key questions around how AI will impact tutoring, the continued role of proving pupil impact on grades and confidence, and the changing funding landscape, this is a topical and important session for todays sixth form leaders.

Drawing on evidence from our 1300+ partner schools and expertise from our Teacher Advisory Board, we look to the future of how online tutoring can be embedded in your sixth Form to support your students through post-16 learning and beyond.

BREAK & EXHIBITION

POST-16 POLICY UPDATE: WHAT DO HEADS OF SIXTH FORM NEED TO KNOW

Speaker: Kevin Gilmartin, Post 16 specialist, ASCL

We have asked Kevin back for another really informative briefing given, so much is happening at post 16!

Topics include changes to inspection framework, Advanced British Standard', maths and English to 18, defunding and possible alternative government post 16 policy.

The White Paper due for the ABS will mean schools ought to examine the implications of the pre-legislative document which is already having an impact in terms of the new hours for GCSE Maths and English resits.

AI AS A HELPFUL TOOL IN THE CLASSROOM AND FOR TEACHERS

Speaker: Jonathan Lane, former Head of Sixth Form, Wyedean School

Jonathan will outline a strategy to share with all KS5 teachers that embraces the benefits of AI to support learning but also helps students appreciate it's limitations in an effort to encourage students to make better choices when using AI.

Jonathan will demonstrate how AI can be helpful for T&L and for teachers to save time, whilst recognising the limitations. It's not going away and we need to embrace the benefits whilst mitigating the misuse.

LEADERSHIP STRATEGIES FOR BUSY HEADS OF SIXTH FORM

Speaker: Michael Senior, Founder, NetSixthForm and former Assistant Headteacher

Over his 31 years in post-16 and many of those being part of SLT, Michael will share helpful leadership theories and practical tips that can support the process of managing a fast-paced, challenging and successful sixth form.

The session will also look at the issue of managing the growing number of Gen Z teachers and managers who we would be wise to consider as needing some specific understanding when being managed and led.

APPLICAAONE - NEW FREE PLATFORM TO HELP YEAR 11 STUDENTS APPLY TO POST 16 CENTRES

Speaker: Antony Wambua, COO, Applicaa

Applicaa are known for their software supporting schools to recruit post 16 students using their portal to manage the application process.

ApplicaaOne is a new free platform for students to research the courses and entry criteria at centres across England. It should prove very useful on GCSE results day for students who do not meet your entry criteria and need help to find alternative centres.

LUNCH & EXHIBITION

WHAT CAN WE DO TO SUPPORT TEENAGE MENTAL HEALTH TO PREPARE THEM FOR LIFE BEYOND SCHOOL?

Speaker: Dr Dominique Thompson, author, Tedx speaker and Director of Buzz Consulting

This session might be better titled 'Degrees of Sanity - supporting the mental health of students' in which Dr Dominique explores:

Preparing for life after school: independence and resilience

Recognising perfectionism and its impact on mental health

Addressing fear of failure in the 21st century

Practical approaches to improving mental health in young adults

After her expert input, delegates will have the opportunity to work collaboratively for a short period to explore changes in their centres to support the mental health of post-16 students.

INDEPENDENT LEARNING ACROSS KEY STAGE 5: CREATING A CONSISTENT APPROACH

Speaker: Shanti Healy, Head of Sixth Form, Sydenham School

Shanti has presented at our conferences on previous occasions and delegates appreciate her practical systems to maximise impact.

This session outlines the strategies Shanti is working on in her centre to help bring about far more consistency when it comes to helping students to become more independent: it takes guidance and clear expectations across all subjects and teachers at post 16.

DEVELOPING AN OUTSTANDING CAREERS AND HIGHER EDUCATION PREPARATION PROGRAMME

Speaker: Jeni McClean, Assistant Headteacher: Post-16, Dame Alice Owen's School

Do you set up both UCAS and apprenticeship pathways so that both routes are viewed as credible choices?

How involved are parents early on in the process?

Do you capture the data needed to target opportunities sensitively and effectively?

There are many interesting features of the support programmes that Jeni McClean will outline, reflecting years of experience so delegates who are either new to post as well as longer serving will benefit.

Following the session, delegates will have the opportunity to work collaboratively consider the implications for their own CEIAG.

USING 'EMOTIONAL LOGIC' TO HELP CHANGE A STUDENT'S PROBLEM BEHAVIOUR

Speaker: Johnathan Lane, former Head of Sixth Form, Wyedean School and Sixth Form Centre

We know them when we feel them but why do we feel them? They shape our decisions but who's in control: us or the emotion? How do we make better choices?

We all have students who struggle with decisions. Some avoid while others shout and swear; some self-harm and others self-sabotage. How can we help students change for the better and make it stick?

Johnathan will give a fresh perspective on how emotions shape the lives of our students and how to help them - and ourselves - make better decisions.

His approach is called 'Emotional Logic', and it's a framework that anyone can follow.

NEW TO HEAD OF SIXTH FORM (optional session)

Speaker: Suki Gill, Post 16 Curriculum and Funding Adviser, HFL

This extra session is an optional workshop during the day. From funding to managing tutors and the UCAS programme, you'll be able to consult an experienced post 16 adviser who will share her advice on how to navigate the new role and stay sane!

CLOSE - followed by free plenary drinks 3.50-4.30pm to celebrate the return of our in-person conference

To celebrate the return of our in-person conference after the pandemic, we are providing a free drinks plenary where you can network and unwind. We'd love it if you stay and have a quick drink with us. Equally, we understand if you need to shoot off and catch a train home!
