UNDERSTANDING YOUR TEACHERS' PENSION: PART 2 - BACK TO BASICS
David Fountain, Founder, Teacher to Teacher Pensions
David, a former teacher, is well known as an impartial educator of the Teachers' Pension Scheme. He is definitely not a financial advisor which is why we have asked David to deliver this session.
This session is about you looking after you! It continues our campaign to help teachers better understand their Teachers' Pension. This briefing takes delegates back to basics. Part 1 was recorded at the Autumn conference and we will make this available to everyone who attends. Part 1 was actually pitched at an advanced level, so this session will take a step back and address many of the queries teachers ask.
Understand the Final Salary and Career Average schemes
Understand why career average is not "just an average"
Know more about options on early retirement
Recognise common misunderstandings about the Teachers' Pension scheme

Panel of sixth form leaders
We will look at a wide range of practical ways you can save time by using AI.
EXPANDING POST-18 HORIZONS: WHY HIGHER TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS (HTQs) MATTER
Jamie Bradford, Head of Future Students, De Montfort University
Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) are employer-designed, government-approved technical qualifications at Levels 4 and 5 (equivalent to the first two years of a degree) that are intended to prepare learners directly for skilled employment or higher technical progression.
Delivered as part of an Extended Education package, HTQ's are rapidly changing the landscape for school leavers of the future, offering a middle ground between highly sought after, but sometimes elusive Higher and Degree Apprenticeships, and traditional academic degrees.
Evolution of these programmes, alongside the potential for fluid, modular based learning linked to the LLE, will offer huge evolution of choice. The role of sixth form and careers teams will be crucial to help key students expand their post-18 horizons.
WHAT UNIVERSITIES WANT TO SEE: WRITING EFFECTIVE UCAS REFERENCES IN THE NEW FORMAT
Panel of universities
Universities have been using the new UCAS reference format from the 2024 entry onwards, so it is timely to provide key feedback to schools and colleges to help you support tutors to write even more effective references.
Delegates will:
Understand how universities read and interpret the new structured reference format
Learn what information is most valuable to admissions teams
Gain strategies for supporting tutors and teachers in writing effective references
INSIDE THE CAMBRIDGE APPLICATION PROCESS: USING THE UCAS REFERENCE AND PERSONAL STATEMENT TO SUPPORT COMPETITIVE APPLICANTS
Mike Nicholson, Director of Recruitment, Admissions and Participation, University of Cambridge
Participants will gain insight into what Cambridge admissions tutors:
are looking for when reviewing applications;
how academic potential is evidenced through the UCAS reference;
and the role the personal statement plays alongside other elements such as predicted grades, admissions assessments and interviews.
A SENSE OF COMMUNITY: ENCOURAGE YOUR STUDENTS TO GIVE BACK TO THEIR COMMUNITY THROUGH DONATING BLOOD AND SAVING LIVES
Lorna Newbrook, former Deputy Head teacher and campaigner for more young people to donate blood
There are many strands to creating a sense of community in your sixth form and blood donation is a key area to help students understand the importance of thinking of others. In this session Lorna Newbrook (former Deputy Head teacher) shares about the importance of blood donation.
Young people are eligible to donate from age 17 and only 2% of those eligible actually donate.
This session will share why it is so important for people to donate blood, how you can encourage your students to give back to their community and build their self-esteem whilst they also save lives. All the resources you need will be provided by Laura.
SUPPORTING STUDENTS THROUGH THE NEW STRUCTURED PERSONAL STATEMENT: A UNIVERSITY PERSPECTIVE FOR SIXTH FORM TUTORS
Fred Binley, Head of UK Student Recruitment, Lancaster University and Jim Calcutt, Head of UK Student Recruitment, University of Winchester
As the new structured UCAS personal statement comes into use for students applying for 2026 entry, universities have been closely considering how the revised format will shape the way applicants present themselves.
While the core purpose of the personal statement remains unchanged, learn from universities how they expect to use the new structured sections
Share the recording of the session with tutors and students to help them focus on the key elements of each section and take away some of the anxiety about what to write about for each question.
A SENSE OF BELONGING: A SPOTLIGHT ON THE CLASSROOM
Johanna Klinsky, Director of Strategic Improvement for Lift Schools
Lift Schools' 2025 Culture and Climate survey mirrored broader, national and international results showing sharp declines in student belonging and engagement, especially during key stage three.
Belonging is contextual and therefore different for every child depending on the relationships in a given space.
This session will focus on our improvement efforts at Lift Schools for belonging in the classroom and how getting this right can improve both student outcomes and wellbeing across the whole school, including post-16.
AI HAS PASSED THE TEST: WHAT NOW FOR SCHOOLS?
Stephen Belding, Director of Academic Programmes, Rugby School Global Partnerships
This session explores how recent advances in artificial intelligence challenge longheld ideas about intelligence, learning and what it means to be human: from the Turing Test to today's large language models.
Using a small number of striking examples, it will show where AI can genuinely extend learning and dialogue in the classroom, and where clear boundaries still matter.
The session will conclude by considering what an effective whole school AI strategy looks like, and why coherence and leadership now matter more than experimentation alone.
