Ask students what stops them from learning (distractions, watching TV, phones, domestic chores) and indicate which ones they feel they can and can't control. They can keep some in their head if they don't want to write some personal reasons down.

Then explore the ones they are happy to talk about and explore ways of minimising the distraction.
