Commas and adverbs in sentences: tutorial activity

Commas and adverbs in sentences: tutorial activity 2 pages 10-15 mins

PROBLEM - Students often enter post 16 studies and have very little understanding of the way commas and adverbs are used in sentences. This tutorial activity tries to help students understand their use.

ADVERBS Adverbs go together with verbs. A verb describes WHAT is done (speak, walk, write) and adverbs describe HOW it is done (speak quietly, walk slowly, write scruffily).

COMMAS are used either side of an adverb when it is used as a clause. If you can remove the word or phrase either side of the commas in a sentence and the sentence still makes sense - that is the clause.

TWO PAGE ACTIVITY SHEET - Students are provided with examples then they have some exercises to do so that they understand where to place commas and how to use adverbs.

10-15 mins exercise.
