SUPPORT FOR EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS:
Students are supported by the Careers Service to develop their skills and enhance their graduate employment success. We support a range of experiences and opportunities, both on and off campus, including volunteering, doing an internship, a part-time job, working as a student ambassador, or holding positions of responsibility, such as becoming a Students’ Union committee member or a course representative.
We assist and empower undergraduate students and recent graduates to find meaningful work-based placement opportunities, which may be in the form of the Professional Skills and Insights programme, the Santander-funded Employability Scheme or the Santander-funded Open Minds Scheme. All undergraduates have the opportunity to apply for our optional placement year.
Before the pandemic, we employed around 1 in 7 of our students, an unusually high figure for a university. Those jobs integrated well with academic work and helped students increase their employability and learn new skills alongside their studies. This is in addition to the part-time employment opportunities offered by the Students Union.
Recent graduates have access to career support for up to two years after graduating. Our team provides one-to-one coaching, CV and application checks and organises events to help alumni as they progress in their graduate careers.
In August 2021, Royal Holloway was awarded a £475,000 grant as part of the new Turing Scheme. This will enable the university to offer its students over 200 additional work and study placements abroad over the next academic year to over 150 international destinations.
It’s no wonder that 79% of Royal Holloway UK undergraduates are in graduate employment or further study within 15 months of graduating (Guardian University League Tables 2022).
STUDENT WELFARE:
The Wellbeing, Support and Guidance team triage wellbeing queries and provides non-clinical advice and guidance to students. The advisers will help coordinate the right support for students or signpost/ refer them to others within the departments for longer-term or more specialised support.
In addition to this, the university has specialised teams to provide advice and guidance on
Immigration and visa issues
Accommodation
Academic support
Childcare
Finances
On-site GP/ nurse appointments
Physio and Psychiatry services
Counselling
Disability and Dyslexia
Multifaith Chaplaincy
